FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a single-party document?

Documents that are encrypted with a single key. A single person is able to decrypt one.

What is a multi-party document?

Documents that are encrypted with multiple keys. Keys are distributed to a number of people. Decrypting the document requires bringing together some number of keys.

How many keys are required to decrypt a single-party document?

One. Single-party documents generate a single key and that is all that's required to decrypt the document.

How many keys are required to decrypt a multi-party document?

When you encrypt a document as a multi-party doc, you specify two things: the number of keys and how many are required for decryption.

For example, you might generate six keys and require that four or more keys are required to decrypt. Then, if any four of the keys are brought together, the document can be decrypted.

Why are multi-party documents useful?

The value lies in the ability to trust a group of people to make the right decision. The document can only be decrypted If multiple people agree and bring their keys together. By specifying a minimum number of keys for decryption means that you don't have to have 100% agreement by the group.

Can a single key decrypt a multi-party document?

No. Decryption requires bringing together, at least, the minimum number of keys specified when the document was encrypted.

Do my encrypted documents have to live on your platform?

No. It's up to you. Download your encrypted documents and keys to store elsewhere if you want. Later on, upload them and easily decrypt as needed.
